Key not detected? What to check before replacing your key

Updated: 2 hours ago
Does your remote work intermittently, or does the dashboard say “key not detected”? Neither symptom proves that you need a new key. A few checks can help you decide what to do next before you order a replacement.

Reduced range? Check the key fob battery
A remote that only works close to the vehicle may have a weak battery. Mazda lists reduced operating range and unresponsive buttons as possible signs. They are clues, rather than a diagnosis.
Use the battery specified for your fob and install it in the correct orientation. Read your vehicle’s manual before opening the case, and stop if it will not open without force. Keep button batteries out of children’s reach.
Move your phone away and compare your spare
Hyundai explains that a phone kept close to the key can interfere with its signal. Separate the two and try again, following the conditions in your owner’s manual.
If you have a spare, compare both keys in the same place. Note which one responds to the buttons and which one starts the vehicle. That information helps us understand the symptoms, although it does not establish the cause on its own.
The vehicle battery matters too
Your fob battery and your vehicle battery are separate power sources. Hyundai lists a discharged vehicle battery as one reason a smart key system may not respond. Replacing the key will not fix that problem. If you suspect the vehicle battery, have an appropriate service provider check it.
A flat fob battery may still leave you a way to start
Some push-button-start vehicles have a backup procedure that lets them recognize the key even with a discharged fob battery. Ford describes one for the Ranger. The location and procedure depend on the vehicle. Follow the manual for your exact model and year instead of trying instructions for a different car.
When to contact us
If the key still will not work, the case is damaged or you would like a spare, send us your vehicle’s make, model and year, a clear key photo and the exact dashboard message. Tell us whether your spare works and whether you have already changed the fob battery.
At Clé Auto Services, we confirm availability and your price before an appointment at our Saint-Léonard shop. We need the vehicle present for our key service. You do not have to identify or buy a replacement part before asking us for a quote.
For key examples and model coverage, see our vehicle-make directory. We confirm compatibility for your exact vehicle before booking.
